Something in the water?

We were absolutely thrilled to get some close-up pics of a Bufflehead at the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge. Every time we see these strikingly beautiful ducks, they swim away so quickly that we usually just end up taking shots of their wake!

The only downside was noticing the discoloration on his throat...

The Ruddy Ducks there also had the same discoloration...

These Ring-necked Ducks had more of a maroon coloring than we usually see, too...

Wonder is there's something in the water that's causing this???

(Also, is it normal for a female Ruddy Duck's bill to turn blue? We thought only the male's did that for summertime!)

As usual, we come away from a birding trip with more questions than answers!
