Colusa National Wildlife Refuge ~ Wetland Birds of California

Wow, what a birding adventure we had at the Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in Northern California! This was the biggest concentration of White-faced Ibis, Egrets, and Herons we've ever seen all in one place! This was also the first time we've ever seen a Bald Eagle at this particular refuge.

We were entertained watching the American Coot stuck in the muck, White-faced Ibis preening their beautiful iridescent feathers, the Black-crowned Night Heron rookery, Snowy Egrets showing off their gorgeous plumage, and a Double-crested Cormorant staring us down with its pretty teal-blue eyes...

Did you know that Great Egrets can fly at a cruising speed of around 25 miles per hour with just two wingbeats per second?

Yup, not only are birds beautiful, they are fascinating in every way!

There are plenty of hawks and eagles hanging around the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge in February (and every other month, for that matter)!

Here are a few beauties we spotted during our drive through the auto tour this week...

Birding at Manzanita Lake ☼ Lassen Volcanic National Park

The trail around Manzanita Lake is one of the easiest and most pleasant walks in Lassen Volcanic National Park. Every step offers gorgeous views and wonderful birding opportunities!

Birds we've spotted around the lake that I put in today's video include: Dark-eyed Junco, Bald Eagle, American Robin, Mountain Chickadee, American Dipper, Evening Grosbeak, Western Tanager, Steller's Jay, Townsend's Solitaire, Bufflehead, White-headed Woodpecker, Western Wood-Pewee, Common Loon, Pacific Wren, and Brown Creeper.

More Bald Eagles ☼ Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Since I've already given some love to the Bald Eagles over at the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge, it's time to feature the eagles we spotted on the auto tour at nearby Tule Lake NWR...

There was tons of carcass carnage on the road, no doubt the remnants of these fierce birds' hunting all those Snow Geese gathered in the lake.

 And here's a bonus Red-tailed Hawk...

Plus, four American White Pelicans!
