We spotted so many birds around the lakes during our Summit Lake Loop Trail in Lassen!
Lots of juvenile White-crowned Sparrows were hanging out next to Lower Twin Lake...
It isn't often that I get two birds to pose for me next to each other!

Nuthatch Sighting
If you've ever tried to take a photo of a nuthatch, you know how quick these little birds can be! So, while we were hiking in Lassen and hubby spotted this White-breasted Nuthatch, we were excited to see that most of the photos actually turned out!

Birding at Ridge Lakes
Our latest hiking adventure in Lassen Volcanic National Park was to Ridge Lakes! After an incredibly scenic sunrise hike, we sat by the lake, ate our lunch and spotted a Red-tailed Hawk a ways up the mountain...
He soared over the ridge for a bit, looking for a lunch of his own...
The sound of Red-breasted Nuthatches echoes through the park, but they don't always cooperate when it comes to posting for photos. This American Robin, however, was kind enough to let me take his picture...

More Birding in the Rain
Rain doesn't keep this determined birder away from the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge!
Last month, I was so excited to spot a Say's Phoebe in my backyard birdbath and then I saw one first thing on the auto tour at the refuge!
Fall colors at the refuge are pretty...

This deer was frozen like a statue and looks a bit more like a donkey than a deer I think!

Birding in the Rain
These aren't the greatest photos I've ever taken at the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, but in my defense, we got caught in the rain and had to cut our visit short!
(You can view the video from our visit on my travel blog Vaughn the Road Again.)
When the sky is this beautiful, it doesn't matter that there wasn't enough light for my camera!
This Swainson's Hawk was the star of the show on the auto tour...

We'll go on the wetlands walk next time!
Tomorrow's post will include the bird we saw at the refuge that we've also seen in our backyard birdbath!
