It's the first day of summer and I'm celebrating with my favorite shorebird photography!

Birds in the video include: White-faced Ibis, Greater Yellowlegs, American Avocet, Killdeer, Black-necked Stilt, Spotted Sandpiper, Long-billed Curlew, Black Oystercatcher, Dunlin, Ruddy Turnstone and Semipalmated Plover.

You know you've had a good day of birding when you come away with over 500 photos!

We saw so many different birds during our latest drive through the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge that I had to split up all the footage into a few different videos.

Today's video includes: Great Blue Heron, Greater Yellowlegs, Red-tailed Hawk, Black-necked Stilt, Prairie Falcon, White-faced Ibis, Marsh Wren, White Pelicans, Double-crested Cormorant, Western Kingbird, Black Phoebe, Western Meadowlark, Snowy Egret, Yellow-rumped Warbler, White-crowned Sparrow, and even some Pond Turtles!

Birding at Gray Lodge Wildlife Area ☼ Gridley, California

The Gray Lodge Wildlife Area is one of my favorite places to go birding in northern California. Between the wide variety of birds and the picturesque views of the Sutter Buttes, this area definitely makes my short list of birding hotspots.

Birds featured in the video from our recent visit include American White Pelicans, Bewick's Wren, Black Phoebe, Spotted Towhee, Greater Yellowlegs, White-faced Ibis, American Avocet, Black-necked Stilt, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Phainopepla, Brewer's Blackbird, Western Scrub-Jay, Cinnamon Teal, Marsh Wren, Tri-colored Blackbird, Western Kingbird, Killdeer, Golden-crowned Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, and Turkey Vultures. Phew! That's a lot of birds!

Wildflower Super Bloom on a Super Windy Day ☼ Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge 2019

We ventured out in the wind to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge and it turned out to be one of our best visits yet. This time was also different because we went in the afternoon instead of our usual sunrise adventure. Let me tell you, the refuge does not disappoint at any hour of the day!

We saw Double-crested Cormorants, Western Kingbirds, Northern Shovelers, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Black Phoebe, Cinnamon Teal, Killdeer, Greater Yellowlegs, Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets and a whole bunch of other "great" birds. They were all battling against the gusting wind, hanging onto their perches for dear life, and looking extra spectacular with their breeding plumage blowing all around.

This video might be my favorite one yet!

Springtime at the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge

It feels weird not posting the photos from our spring visit to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, but I added them into the video below along with all the footage we took and I'm really happy with how it turned out. (I'll be posting the photos on social media, so you can see them on Twitter and Instagram, too.) It was easy to take fantastic photos when the rising sun and full moon seemed to make everything glow at the refuge.

We saw a variety of different birds, including Black-necked Stilts, Snowy Egret, Black Phoebe, Tree Swallow and Marsh Wren, just to name a few. Ducks were out in abundance with plenty of Bufflehead, Rind-necked and Northern Shovelers. And not everything at the refuge has wings! There were also black-tailed deer, western pond turtle, and black-tailed jackrabbits.

I only hope that my video does justice to the natural beauty of the refuge...
