2019, here we come!

🙛 Out with the old and in with the new!

Although we didn't go on a Big Year in 2018, we still saw so many memorable birds--and a lot of them were in my own backyard! I hope you had lots of wonderful bird sightings, too.

Here's to a new year filled with many more wings and daydreams!

Happy New Year,
Rachelle Vaughn

Birds of Tule Lake NWR

The Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located in northern California near the Oregon border. It covers almost 40,000 acres in the Tule Lake basin. These are some of the birds I've spotted during my visits to the refuge throughout the seasons...

For more photos of Tule Lake NWR sightings, visit my website's archive here.

Snow Dipper

We drove up to Lassen Volcanic National Park and it is truly a winter wonderland!
I wasn't really expecting to see too many birds, but we heard nuthatches and caught a glimpse of some chickadees fluttering around in the trees. The one bird we did get to photograph was enough to put a smile on my face.
This is Manzanita Creek, right where it flows into Manzanita Lake. This spot is one of my favorites and I've never seen it covered in snow before. If you follow my blog, you know which bird we see bee-bopping around in this creek nearly every time we visit.
The American Dipper! He (or she!) was there in the creek going about business as usual.

I know they live in the park year-round, but I never expected to see him in winter! They are such hardy, delightful little birds!

Preying on Gray Lodge

The view of the Sutter Buttes at Gray Lodge Wildlife Area is pretty spectacular...
The hawks in the area have plenty of snacks to choose from!
