The Beauty of Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge

After sharing pics from our visit to the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge, I thought I'd put together a little video so you can see just how pretty the refuge is!

Two Greeting Grebes

 Besides the two Clark's Grebes that greeted (and actually swam TOWARD us at the entrance),

 we saw quite a few gulls on the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge auto tour...

I've dubbed my hubby The Grebe Whisperer.

From looking at these fantastic photos he took in Klamath, I'd say he deserves the title!

Somehow, when faced with an entire lake of grebes, he's able to snap away with one incredible shot after the other...

(This is the first juvenile Western Grebe we've ever seen!)

In comparison, here's the only shot of a grebe I managed to get that day...

Yeah, not so great, is it?

From now on, I'll let the master take care of getting the grebe photos :)

Tule Lake NWR Auto Tour - Part Five

The Space Between...

The town of Tulelake doesn't have a space between Tule and Lake, but on the website (and brochure) for the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge, there is one. Huh.

Either way, the landscape there is stunning and the birds are plentiful! Who cares how they choose to spell it!

Now, on to the rest of our photos from the auto tour...

This Snowy Egret was showing off his cool summer plumage...

As always, there was a hodgepodge of Grebes at the refuge...

...and they're all sporting that CGI-looking red eye!

Tule Lake NWR - Part 1

I know I've overused this word on my blog, but it was a "beautiful" day at the Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge Complex. We can always count on seeing a variety of ducks at the Tule Lake NWR. This time was no exception as we saw a Common Merganser right as we turned onto the auto tour...

 Grebes like to hang out here and there's always a few ruddy ducks to put a smile on our faces.

 Even when they aren't performing their mating dance, the grebes seem to move in unison...

Tomorrow we take a closer look at an American White Pelican...

Rainy Day Grebes

I'm so glad the Pool 2 Extension at the Sacramento NWR auto tour is open!

The grebes like to hang out there and we saw several, all paired up for springtime...
