Lassen Volcanic National Park Birds

We saw a couple of firsts during our visit to the Lassen Volcanic National Park!

Every time we go to Lassen, we hear the distinct calls of the Red-breasted Nuthatch (yank, yank!) high up in the trees, but we've never actually seen one. Well, that all changed when this little nuthatch (they are much smaller than I thought they were) foraged around on the ground about 15 feet in front of us. What a thrill!

He was moving so quickly it was tough to get him (or her!) in frame and the camera focused in time to get the shot.

So excited to finally get another bird that was so high up on our wish list!

But that's not all. While we were walking around Manzanita Lake, we heard a loon. This is a bird we've heard a few times, too, but have never actually seen in person.

The birding gods must have been smiling down upon us because, sure enough, we spotted a loon waaaay out in the middle of the lake...
